MINI Cooper Summary
The MINI Cooper’s retro style is instantly recognizable, but there’s more to this iconic subcompact car than looks. It offers easy handling, responsive steering and a choice of powerful three- or four-cylinder engines that provide good fuel economy for its class. Manual and automatic transmissions are available across a range of convertible and coupe (fixed hood) body styles with basic and luxury trims. It makes up for limited interior space with its distinctive silhouette and athletic performance. This is a car for those looking for a fun driving experience and a reliable, practical and attractive design.
MINI Cooper Safety
The MINI Cooper underwent a complete redesign in 2009. Standard features in all MINI Coopers produced since then include:
- Anti-lock braking to help prevent skidding
- Traction control for improved stability on slippery surfaces
- Electronic stability control to prevent swerving in emergency situations
- Driver and passenger airbags for added protection
- Daytime running lights to ensure the car is visible to other drivers at all times
Most of the above safety technologies are available in earlier MINI Coopers from 2002 on, although you may need to choose an add-on package for some vehicles. Upper-level trims also offer fog lamps and rear parking sensors to assist with parking. Additionally, later generations as of the 2014 model year offer driver assist technologies such as automatic pre-collision braking, which applies the brakes to prevent crashes or to reduce the impact of one. Another useful safety feature is the crash sensor with fuel cutoff, which shuts down fuel supply post-crash to reduce the risk of fire.
MINI Cooper Interior
The MINI Cooper’s sophisticated interior offers a wealth of features, with the following included as standard since 2009:
- Leather-wrapped, adjustable steering wheel
- Vinyl seat
- Keyless entry
- Power door locks, mirrors and windows
- Auxiliary power outlet
- Power steering
- Illuminated vanity mirrors for driver and passenger (not with all convertibles)
Earlier MINI Coopers from 2002-2009 offer most of the above features across a range of trim levels. Options available with newer models around 2015 include keyless start, steering-wheel mounted controls and rain-sensing wipers.
MINI Cooper Technology
All MINI Coopers come with AM/FM radio, auxiliary audio input and a CD player as standard. Newer variants offer satellite radio, USB connections and a premium Harman Kardon sound system. The Mini Connected infotainment system is standard from 2017 and available on models from 2013 onward. Bluetooth became optional in 2009, and a navigation system became available in 2005. The car’s audio and climate controls aren’t well-marked and can be awkward to use, but the infotainment system has a simpler, straightforward 6.5-inch or 8-inch screen.
MINI Cooper Space
Some drivers find the MINI Cooper’s cargo space too limited, but this was improved on with the 2014 redesign. The car seats four, though the rear seat can feel cramped for adults. The four-door hatchbacks offer more space and make the most of limited cargo capacity with their 60/40 folding rear seats and large openings.
MINI Cooper Comfort
Air conditioning is standard in all MINI Coopers with dual-zone climate control available in select models, allowing individual temperature adjustments for driver and passenger. Heated leather seats are available with adjustable lumbar support. The MINI Cooper’s sharp steering and powerful brakes combine for easy handling, but the stiff suspension can reduce the smoothness of your ride.
