Older X5s feature front, side and overhead airbags, stability sensors to help you stay in control and anti-lock brakes to maintain traction should you need to stop suddenly. In new models, expect amped-up safety add-ons like:

• Laserlight headlamp technology for 500 m of visibility at night, almost double that of standard LEDs 
• Automatic Speed Limit Assist so you don't exceed the speed limit accidentally
• Parking assistant that uses rear cameras and sensors to make parking easier
• Lane-keeping Assist to let you know when you’re drifting, although some drivers find the alerts more distracting than helpful

BMW X5 Interior

Every generation of the X5 pushes the boundaries of interior comfort with interior mood lighting and supportive leather seats. There’s also a panoramic glass sunroof to let in natural light during the day and create a calming atmosphere at night. You can even opt for rear-seat touchscreens in newer models to keep passengers entertained, or a surround-sound system to fill the space with music.

There’s a reason the X5 is one of the best high-tech cars, especially when it comes to the 2018 and 2019 editions. The BMW Operating System 7.0 includes an Intelligent Personal Assistant, which learns and adjusts to driver behaviours. Other options include gesture, touch screen and speech controls, as well as seamless integration with Apple technology. Some drivers find all this tech a little overwhelming, so opt for an older model if you prefer basic perks like keyless entry, heated mirrors and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

The X5 has always been a spacious vehicle, with plenty of leg and headroom for occupants and a large trunk that can carry lots of cargo. BMW’s recent changes to the design add even more space, with an electric-split tailgate for easy loading and unloading. A third row of seats means large families or groups are well catered for.
