From day one of its development, the Ford Ranger was designed to have excellent fuel economy while remaining a capable workhorse. The first Ford Ranger was a badge-engineered version of the Mazda Courier but with more stringent fuel economy regulations. To achieve its fuel economy goals, the Ford Ranger received extensive wind tunnel testing to make it as aerodynamic as possible, while its construction made use of high-strength steel, magnesium and aluminum to reduce weight. There was even an EV version built between 1998 and 2002 with a range of 65 miles.
Second and third generations
Ford sold more than two million first-generation Ford Rangers before the second generation hit showrooms. Debuting in 1993 with a unique body featuring further aerodynamic improvements, the Ford Ranger would eventually go out of production in 2011, when the last pickup truck rolled off the line. It had been in production for 29 years and would return for a third generation as a four-door light pickup truck with five- or six-foot beds. The third-generation model makes use of the same body-on-frame construction as the original and arrived in North American showrooms in 2019.
