In 1973, the Volkswagen Passat first launched in Europe as a family-sized hatchback. First-generation models, from 1973 to 1980, were sold under the VW Dasher nameplate in North America. Second-generation vehicles, made from 1981 to 1988, were called the Volkswagen Quantum. The VW Passat name finally arrived in North America in 1990.
