In 1973, the Volkswagen Passat first launched in Europe as a family-sized hatchback. First-generation models, from 1973 to 1980, were sold under the VW Dasher nameplate in North America. Second-generation vehicles, made from 1981 to 1988, were called the Volkswagen Quantum. The VW Passat name finally arrived in North America in 1990. In 2011, Volkswagen decided to begin producing the Volkswagen Passat in the United States, creating a more spacious version of their best-selling car. North American models from 2012 to 2022 offer increased passenger and trunk space compared to their European counterparts. 2022 marks the final year for the Volkswagen Passat in North America.
