The Volkswagen GLI is a variant edition of the popular Volkswagen Jetta. Formerly referred to as the Volkswagen Jetta GLI, the sporty upgrade was introduced in 1984. The acronym ‘GLI’ stands for Grand Luxury Injection, a similar trim style to the Volkswagen Golf GTI or Grand Tourer Injection. The main difference between the two upgrades was that the Volkswagen Jetta GLI was larger and available in a four-door. However, the sportier and more powerful engine required a fitting name for the trim package. As of 2008, the model dropped the Jetta badge and has since been sold in Canada as the Volkswagen GLI.
