The Dodge Challenger debuted in 1970 as a competitor to the Mercury Cougar and Pontiac Firebird. Built on the same platform as the Plymouth Barracuda and launched as a coupe or convertible, the first Dodge Challengers came standard with a 3.7-litre six-cylinder engine. There were eight optional V8s for the 1970 Dodge Challenger, with the top-of-the-line being a 7.2-litre Hemi V8 rated at 425 horsepower. Despite its iconic styling and V8 power, the original Dodge Challenger did not sell especially well and was harmed by the oil crisis, going out of production in 1974.
New Dodge Challenger
Dodge displayed the new Dodge Challenger concept in 2006 before putting the car into production in 2008. In 2009 a base SE model was introduced with a 3.5-litre V6, making 250 horsepower, and in 2015 Dodge debuted the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat featuring a 707 Horsepower Supercharged 6.2 L Hemi V8. The Dodge Challenger GT received an all-wheel drive option paired with the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6. In 2019, Dodge launched the Dodge Challenger Hellcat wide-body to give the wildly powerful muscle car fender flares and wider tires for better traction off the line.
