History of Used SUV/Crossovers

It was before and during World War II when vehicles needed to transition from the fragile body type of the sedans into something more rugged and off-road capable. During those early decades, the most similar version of the modern SUV was the 1940 Humber Heavy Utility, which featured a four-wheel-drive built on a Humber Super Snipe passenger vehicle chassis. It was not until the arrival of the 1984 Jeep Cherokee that the modern SUV/Crossover began to take shape. By the early 2000s, there were an estimated 76 million used SUV/Crossovers on US roads, accounting for 35% of the vehicle market. In 2019, the number grew exponentially to around 200 million vehicles.

Today, SUV/Crossovers make up nearly half of the US vehicle sales market compared to the 22% sales of modern sedans. Manufacturers have been on top of this trend, and almost all companies offer an SUV/Crossover in their lineup, and many of them continue to phase out sedan models. While the market struggled early because of the poor fuel efficiency of the design, the rapid growth of hybrid/electric vehicles have made the debate nearly obsolete.
