Scion was founded by Toyota in 2003 and was squarely aimed at younger consumers. The brand featured a number of business practices that differentiated it from competitors and aimed to appeal to a new generation of buyers while also serving as a test-bed to see if these practices would work for Toyota itself. Each model received a single trim package and a fixed price while a list of options allowed customers to personalize their vehicles. Scion was introduced at the 2002 New York Auto Show and was marketed through non-conventional means like brand collaborations in the hopes of attracting the younger target market.
The Scion identity
Scion launched with two concept vehicles, the bbX and ccX which would become the Scion xB and Scion tC when they went into production. The brand did well in its early years and its best sales year came in 2006 with 173,000 vehicles sold. Buyers liked the Scion focus on sporty yet compact handling, performance and youthful style. Unfortunately, the set price model left limited margin for profit on the dealer's end of the arrangement and demand slowed during the financial crisis at the end of the 2000s. Scion couldn't achieve sales like it had done in 2006, and with the brand in decline, Toyota pulled the plug in 2016.
