Saturn was created as a General Motors brand in 1985 in an attempt to compete with Japanese and domestic compact cars that were becoming increasingly popular at the time. Production began in 1990 with the Saturn SC and Saturn SL serving as the brand's debut offerings. The SC was the new compact coupe and the SL was the sedan version. In 1993 the pair were joined by the SW with its more practical wagon layout. Saturn cars sold well, and in May 1995 the millionth vehicle was built. In 1996, the forward-thinking Saturn dealerships even sold the GM EV1, which was the first electric vehicle General Motors ever sold.
The Saturn approach
Built from the start to be innovative and original, Saturn dealerships worked on a no-haggle basis where the price you saw on the sticker was the price you paid. This was a double-edged sword for the consumer as it eliminated pushy salespeople but also meant they couldn't talk the dealer down to a lower price. Nevertheless, Saturn fans enjoyed the approach as well as the difference between their vehicles and other GM products. While some of GM's brands were alike in all but badging, Saturns looked new and unique despite sharing platforms with other vehicles. As with Pontiac, Saturn became a casualty of GM's 2009 restructuring and ceased production.
