Pontiac was founded in 1925 as a lower-priced alternative to another General Motors brand known as Oakland. The first Pontiac was launched in 1926 and before long it outsold its big brother. The Oakland brand was discontinued in 1931, paving the way for Pontiac to take over, eventually becoming a division of General Motors in its own right. The car took its name from a Native American chief who had led his army in battle against the British at Fort Detroit, as well as the city in Michigan where the cars were built. The company offered cars in a number of body styles ranging from practical sedans to sporty convertibles and coupes.
Trademark performance
A hallmark of the Pontiac brand was its focus on sporting prowess and performance. The company advertised its cars as having wider track widths than its competitors, meaning that the wheels were further apart on each side to give better handling and less body roll. Cars like the Pontiac Tempest and Trans Am epitomized this sporty focus with powerful engines to match their athletic handling, a tradition carried into the late 2000s with cars such as the Pontiac G8 and Solstice. Unfortunately, Pontiac became a victim of GM's bankruptcy in 2009 and was discontinued as part of its parent company's reorganization.
