Polestar origin and evolution
Founded in 1996, Polestar started out as a Swedish racing team under the name Flash Engineering. It was renamed Polestar in 2005 before becoming Volvo's official sport-tuning partner in 2009. After Volvo acquired the brand in 2015, the Polestar name started appearing on high-performance Volvo vehicles. In 2017, Volvo announced that Polestar would become a standalone brand focused on high-performance hybrid and electric vehicles. The first Polestar, the Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid, debuted in 2020 and was discontinued in 2021. Going forward, the company plans to only produce electric vehicles under the Polestar name.
Polestar models available in Canada
There is currently one Polestar model available in Canada: the Polestar 2. The Polestar 2 is a four-door electric sedan with a fastback hatch. Designed to compete with the Tesla Model 3, the Polestar 2 offers a range of up to 427 km fully charged. It's available as a single motor with front-wheel drive or dual motor with all-wheel drive. Looking for a different Polestar model? The limited-edition Polestar 1 is a high-performance plug-in hybrid coupe. With fewer than 1,500 units made over its three-year production run, the Polestar 1 is fairly rare. Upcoming models include the 2023 Polestar 3 all-electric SUV and 2024 Polestar 5 luxury electric hatchback.
