Plymouth debuted in 1928, launched by the Chrysler Corporation with the aim of entering the lower-cost end of the auto market. Ford and Chevrolet had done well in the segment and Chrysler wanted in on the profits. Plymouth's first car was launched at Madison Square Garden with its higher initial price offset by standard features that weren't offered by its competition. The new brand was a success, helped keep Chrysler afloat during the Great Depression, and became the corporation's best-selling brand by volume; a record it held until the late 1990s.
Sporting intentions
If there was one area in which Plymouth shone brighter than any other, it was muscle cars. In 1964 Plymouth launched the Barracuda, considered its first sport-focused vehicle, and by 1968 was selling the much-loved Road Runner. This was a pared-back coupe with few creature comforts that, crucially, was available with one of Chrysler's big block V8s and a four-speed manual transmission. Unfortunately, by the end of the 1990s Plymouth's vehicles began to lose their brand identity and sales power. With a great deal of crossover between its brands, Chrysler decided that it no longer needed to produce nearly-identical cars with different badges. Despite a short-lived revival with the Plymouth Prowler the brand was removed from the market in 2001.
