The Chevrolet Camaro made its debut in 1966 with its sight set firmly on the wildly successful Ford Mustang. Chevy had a performance car called the Monza but wanted something specifically designed to take on Ford's pony car. Additionally, the Monza engine bay couldn't play host to the full family of Chevrolet V8 engines, thus limiting its potential as a true speed machine. A new car was created and given the name Camaro—a French slang word meaning 'friend'. With the ability to house the Chevy range of inline-6 and V8 engines, the new pony car had the range to take the fight to Ford.
Generations
The Chevrolet Camaro has, over the course of six model generations, taken many forms. It's been a sporty performance car and the fury of an all-out muscle car. With this range and a catalogue of victories in a wide range of motorsports, it's not surprising the car holds such a fond place in automotive history. Initial production took place from 1966 to 2002 before being revived with the fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro in 2009. Now in its sixth generation, the versatile car still comes in varients: playful sports car, monster muscle and circuit racing.
