The Oldsmobile Cutlass car is a classic vehicle whose production ran from 1961 to 1999 and came in three body styles: the personal luxury coupe, the mid-size and the compact. Interestingly, the badging is named after a type of sword. The Oldsmobile Cutlass was initially intended to be a compact entry-level model. Still, it became more popular as an intermediate family car. The early Oldsmobile Cutlass spawned a whole range of vehicles from the company, including station wagons and muscle cars. The Cutlass nameplate was added to several models during its production run, like the Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, the Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais and the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.
Oldsmobile Cutlass history
The Oldsmobile Cutlass survived through six unique generational redesigns. As mentioned, the first-generation model was a compact car. The unibody design failed to reach sales expectations, and thus, the vehicle was expanded for its second generation in 1964. Although, it wasn't until the 1968 third-generation model that the Oldsmobile Cutlass earned its reputation as an exceptional vehicle. At this time, Oldsmobile diversified the badge, offering everything from city-friendly sedans to supercharged sports coupes. Later generations would classify the Oldsmobile Cutlass as a family-friendly vehicle.
Oldsmobile Cutlass features
The last generation of the Oldsmobile Cutlass car was a four-door sedan with a V6 engine and a four-speed automatic drivetrain. Running from 1997 to 1999, the updated Oldsmobile Cutlass was mechanically identical to the Chevrolet Malibu. However, the Oldsmobile version was considered slightly more upscale with options such as leather interior and power mirrors. Unfortunately, this final generation of the Oldsmobile Cutlass was not available in Canada. Drivers looking for that classic extended hood should check out models produced in the 80s or earlier.
