The first Nissan Skyline debuted in 1969 after Nissan and Prince Motor Company merged. It was available as a GT-R version with a 160 horsepower inline-six-cylinder engine and four-wheel independent suspension. The first Nissan Skyline to use the R model code that would become synonymous with the car was the R30, which arrived in 1981. This iteration featured sharper styling and a multitude of body styles. The R30 Nissan Skyline was followed by the R31 in 1986, though the sporting nature of the Nissan Skyline was yet to be revealed.
The birth of Godzilla
The R32 Nissan Skyline debuted in 1989, featuring all-wheel drive and an inline-six-cylinder engine that produced 280 horsepower. This car cemented the Nissan Skyline as a performance icon around the world. It even earned the nickname "Godzilla" for its dominance in the Japanese Touring Car Championship, where it won 29 races in a row over four seasons. The R33 Nissan Skyline was launched in 1995 with a stiffer body and new traction control system before the R34 added twin turbochargers to the engine in 1998. The R35 generation dropped the Skyline name, and it is now known only as the Nissan GT-R. When it debuted in North America, it paired a 473 horsepower twin-turbo V6 engine with an advanced all-wheel-drive system.
