The first car that can trace its lineage to Nissan was built in Japan in 1914. Known as the DAT it got the ball rolling on what would become one of the world's largest car companies. The brand name Nissan came about after a series of mergers and acquisitions resulted in a holding company known as Nippon Sangyo overseeing the empire. The company's stock symbol was abbreviated as NISSAN and this eventually became the company's new name. In 1930 Nissan began importing, building and selling the Austin Seven under license, and in 1952 entered into an agreement with the company that allowed Nissan to produce the parts in Japan.
Nissan goes global
Nissan debuted an advanced new engine in 1967 and used it to power the new Datsun 510 sedan before introducing the much-loved six-cylinder Datsun 240Z in 1969. The cars were a hit and proved that there was a demand for Nissan's vehicles all over the world, especially in the US and Australia where domestically-built cars were typically larger and thirstier than the economical Nissans. Nissan began its motorsports endeavors in 1958 and by the mid-1960s had moved up from racing modified sedans to designing purpose-built racing prototypes. The company's racing division, Nismo, was created in 1984 named from a combination of the words Nissan and motorsport.
