The Mazda3 (sometimes written as Mazda 3 or Mazda Mazda3) was launched in 2003 as an inexpensive yet engaging economy car. Throughout its history, the Mazda3 has received praise for its enjoyable handling, handsome styling and fuel efficiency. Available in sedan or hatchback body styles, the Mazda3 received a second-generation update in 2008. From 2012 onwards, Mazda3 incorporated Mazda's Skyactiv technology consisting of improvements to engines and gearboxes, stiffer chassis and more aerodynamic bodywork. This holistic approach to engineering improved what was already a quality offering and kept the Mazda3 in line with Mazdaâs reputation for innovation.
Outside the box
Mazda has been an innovative company since it produced its first car in 1960. Soon after they began designing cars, Mazda's engineers started developing rotary engines. Rotaries do away with the pistons found inside traditional engines in favour of triangular rotors which move around a pill-shaped combustion chamber. With the lightweight rotary engine, Mazda vehicles could generate the same amount of power as much heavier piston-powered models. Less weight meant better handling and culminated with the Mazda 787B winning the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. It remains the only rotary-engined car to take overall victory to this day.
