The Chevrolet Corvette story began in 1953 with the launch of the first generation. Taking its name from the small, nimble warship, the Chevrolet Corvette featured an inline six-cylinder engine. It came with a lightweight fibreglass body and began a trend that lasts to this day, with every Chevrolet Corvette making use of lightweight composite bodywork. The car was given a V8 option in 1955 and 'America's Sports Car' has been powered by that most American of engines ever since. Chevrolet Corvettes were built in St Louis, Missouri until 1981 before production moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Evolution of an icon
The styling of the Chevrolet Corvette brings something for everyone and reflects the era of each generation. The original C1 brings serene 50s style, while the C2 reflects the ‘cool is king’ spirit of the 1960s. The C3 makes use of bold, swooping 1970s body lines while the C4's angular styling, pop-up headlights and digital dash brought the car into the 1980s. The C5 Chevrolet Corvette refined the styling and increased the power to the point that 2009's C6 ZR1 package produced 638 horsepower from its 6.2-litre supercharged V8 engine. The C7 continued the refinement trend and the mid-engined C8 changed everything.
