Mitsubishi was originally founded as a freight company before moving into shipbuilding and then automobiles. Mitsubishi's first car came along in 1917 and was known as the Model A, featuring a sedan body and a 35 horsepower engine. The Model A was designed with engineering developed by Fiat and was aimed at luxury car buyers. Only 22 Model As were ever built though it still qualifies as Japan's first ever series production car. Despite its luxury appointments and Italo-Japanese engineering, the Model A soon faded from the market as pressure from imported vehicles grew. With the exception of a couple of prototype all-wheel drive sedans for the Japanese military it would be 1960 before Mitsubishi built another car.
Motorsports legacy
The 1960 Mitsubishi 500 was launched at the Tokyo Auto Show and proved to be a sales success. It was small, light, had independent suspension for accurate handling, and was powered by a buzzing 21 horsepower engine with a three-speed manual gearbox. The 500 Super Deluxe increased to 25 horsepower and announced Mitsubishi's arrival in the world of motorsport by finishing first through fourth in the 1962 Macau Grand Prix. The company would go on to build some of the best rally cars ever, with the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution winning four consecutive World Rally Championships between 1996 and 1999.
