The Mini is an icon of simple design and clever packaging that first appeared in 1961. It didn't take long for people to see the nimble car's motorsport potential. One of these Mini hot-rodders was John Cooper, who enlarged the car's engine and upgraded its carburetors, brakes and transmission. The Mini Cooper was a hit on the world's racetracks and rally stages, and when BMW revived the brand in 2001, Cooper's son wasted no time in offering tuning kits to boost the car's capabilities. BMW bought the JCW rights in 2008 and began building their own Mini John Cooper Works cars.
Mini John Cooper Works upgrades
Backed by BMW engineering, the Mini John Cooper Works became a certified hot hatchback. The first-generation Mini John Cooper Works sent 208 horsepower to its front wheels and featured Brembo brakes, a limited-slip differential and an upgraded traction control system—meaning that like the original version from the 1960s, it could run with much more expensive and powerful cars. Mini offered a more extreme version known as the Mini John Cooper Works GP with increased power, aerodynamic bodywork and a roll cage in place of the rear seats.
