Mercury, the now-defunct division of the Ford Motor Company, is not well-known for its pickup trucks. The car manufacturer is more recognized for its mid-range sedans, bridging the price gap between Ford vehicles and luxury brand Lincoln. Introduced in 1938, Mercury had immediate success selling sedans and convertibles and later expanded to station wagons, minivans and SUVs before discontinuing the badge name in 2011. However, surprisingly, Mercury had a significant and successful run producing and selling pickup trucks in Canada in the early years.
Introduction of Mercury pickup trucks
After World War II, the Ford Motor Company was making a significant effort to increase the availability of their truck line-up. Aside from Mercury, Ford also introduced new vehicle badges Meteor and Monarch. Repurposing Ford F-series trucks under the new badges allowed the company to sell at lower prices and to a broader range of consumers. Only available in Canada, the Mercury M-Series line of trucks sold through 1946 until 1968 when the Automotive Trade Agreement between Canada and the US was signed, eliminating the need for a dual market.
Defining features of Mercury pickup trucks
Unsurprisingly, Ford did not invest much into its rebadging of the Ford F-series trucks for sale by Mercury. The majority of Mercury pickup trucks for sale were identical clones to the original version, with little more than a different logo to separate the vehicles. True for the entire Mercury M-Series line, the only defining features were cosmetic, including chrome grilles and colour changes for interior plastic moulding. Truthfully, finding new and used Mercury pickup trucks for sale is as easy as finding a vintage Ford F-Series. It is a matter of changing the medallion on the front of the vehicle.
