Mercury is a former division of the American automobile manufacturer Ford. One of the nameplates given to a series of vehicles created by the branch is Mercury Cougar. The range of cars under the Mercury Cougar badge includes convertibles, sedans, station wagons and most commonly two-door coupes. Originally available between 1967 and 1997, a second run of the Mercury Cougar occurred from 1999 to 2002. Producing nearly 3 million units, the Mercury Cougar is the second best-selling vehicle from the Ford division, with only the Mercury Grand Marquis exceeding its sales. No longer in production, customers can only find used Mercury Cougars for sale.
Vintage Mercury Cougars
Traditionally, Mercury Cougar models were redesigned counterparts to existing Ford models. Examples include the first-generation Mercury Cougar, which was a redesigned Ford Mustang, and the third-generation model, which reimagined the Ford Elite. More often the distinguishing differences between the Mercury cars and the Ford originals were minor alterations to exterior features, such as grilles or lighting components. For the fifth and sixth generations, Mercury Cougars began narrowing down the series to the two-door coupe styles, becoming counterparts to the Ford Granada.
Eighth-generation Mercury Cougar
While most used Mercury Cougar comes from the first seven generations, the revival of the brand between 1999 and 2002 had its own success. Leading up to its release, Ford had a stacked lineup of new models, including a revamped Ford Mustang and the brand-new Ford Escort ZX2. With another model prepared for release—the Ford Probe—the company opted to release it under the Mercury brand as a new Mercury Cougar. Unfortunately, by 2002, the Mercury Cougar was left without a Ford model to build upon and was discontinued.
