The Mazda RX-8 made its debut in 2004 as the successor to the much-loved Mazda RX-7. Mazda's rotary engine uses a triangular rotor for compression in place of the pistons found in most automotive engines. With near 50:50 weight balance, rear wheel drive, and the option of five- and six-speed manual transmissions, the Mazda RX-8 is a true driver's car, though its trademark backward-opening rear doors mean that it can also seat four full-grown adults. Mazda built 192,000 RX-8s over the model's eight-year lifespan.
Rotary power
The Mazda RX-8 is powered by a 1.3-litre rotary engine that makes 237 horsepower. With one of the manual gearboxes equipped, the RX-8's engine is capable of a lofty 9000 rpm redline, though this is decreased to 7500 rpm in automatic cars because Mazda couldn't find an automatic transmission that could handle such high revs. The RX-8 received an update in 2009 which improved chassis rigidity and the rear suspension design, resulting in a car that was slightly faster despite making the same power as the original. Additionally, the updated RX-8 received shorter gear ratios to quicken its acceleration.
Mazda RX-8 rivals
The Mazda RX-8 competes in the sports car segment against the likes of the Nissan 370Z, Acura RSX and Ford Mustang, with its relatively spacious rear seats also bringing it into competition against the BMW 3 Series as a fun, well-handling, yet remarkably practical daily driver.
