The Toyota Tundra launched in 1999 as Toyota's second entrant to the full-sized pickup truck market (after the T100) and the first to be built in North America. The truck was originally available with the choice of a 3.4 litre V6 or 4.7 litre V8 engine, before the addition of a 4.0 litre V6 in 2005. To increase power and buyer appeal, Toyota offered both of the original engines with an optional Toyota Racing Development supercharger that added around 70 horsepower. Supercharging gave the V6 an additional 40 pounds per foot of torque and added 80 pounds per foot to the V8. Now in its second model generation, the Toyota Tundra is available with the choice of five engines and three transmissions.
Safety and quality
The Toyota Tundra features an array of standard safety systems. In addition to a suite of airbags, the Toyota Tundra features vehicle stability control, antilock brakes, traction control and brake assist. The Toyota Tundra is regarded as one of the safest full-size pickup trucks on the market, winning numerous awards for safety and quality. It was the first full-size pickup to be named a “Top Pick” for safety by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). And, in 2016, one driver, Victor Sheppard, clocked one million miles on his 2007 Toyota Tundra—with its original engine and transmission!
