The Subaru Impreza made its debut in 1992, not long after Subaru began campaigning in the World Rally Championship (WRC) with British firm Prodrive. The company's cars had long been seen as sensible, capable workhorses but the association with one of the world's toughest forms of racing brought new glamour and interest to their offerings. The Subaru Impreza could be used as an everyday car. But with the addition of a turbocharger, it becomes a fast, desirable and practical daily driver. Winning the WRC Constructors' Championship in 1995, 1996 and 1997 propelled the Subaru Impreza into the public eye and sales soon followed.
Mechanically different
There are two factors that underpin every Subaru Impreza and set it aside from many of its competitors: its boxer engine and its all-wheel drive system. The boxer engine has two banks of cylinders arranged in a flat configuration which gives a distinct sound and lower center of gravity. Only Subaru, Toyota and Porsche use Boxer engines in their modern cars. Subaru's patented Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system comes standard on all the company's vehicles and has become a brand staple. The system increases vehicle stability by detecting wheel slip and automatically sending power to whichever wheels have the most traction to keep the car under control in any weather.
