The Land Rover Defender debuted in 1948 as a durable off-road workhorse. Inspired by the original Jeep, the first-generation Land Rover Defender, officially known as the Series I, went into production with a steel frame, aluminum body and four-wheel drive. Available in various body configurations, the Series I was produced until the Series II arrived in 1958 with lightly updated styling and new luxuries like door cards and side mirrors. The Series III Land Rover Defender debuted in 1971, and a V8 engine was offered from 1979. In 1983, Land Rover began selling 90 and 110 variants with two and four doors, respectively.
Officially a Defender
The Land Rover Defender name became official in 1990 after the launch of the brand's second model, the Land Rover Discovery. This fourth generation featured much of the same styling as its predecessors and was built from 1990 to 2016. The L663-generation Land Rover Defender launched in 2020 with big changes to the recipe: The traditional body-on-frame architecture was dropped in favour of a unibody construction with independent suspension, but thanks to less weight and the latest off-road technology, the Land Rover Defender loses none of its trademark 4x4 abilities.
