Isuzu history and hard times
While Isuzu's story begins back in 1916, it wasn't until 1949 that the company began operating under the Isuzu name. The first Isuzu-designed and built car was the Isuzu Bellel, a diesel-powered compact car produced from 1961 to 1967. The first Japanese diesel-engine passenger car, the four-door Bellel was available as a sedan or station wagon. In the mid-60s, Isuzu began to expand into global markets, with exports to Canada starting in 1965. In 1972, General Motors purchased 34% of the company, helping Isuzu grow its North American business. By 1999, GM owned 49%. While Isuzu cars were once popular for being affordable and reliable, the company hit hard times in the late '90s and early 2000s. Withdrawing from Canada in 2002 and the United States in 2009, Isuzu decided to focus on its commercial business.
