Once one of America's biggest companies, International Harvester made its name producing farming equipment. But during its time in business, the company was also known for making passenger vehicles and work trucks. Some believe International Harvester actually pioneered both the pickup truck and the SUV. International Harvester history and innovation
International Harvester has a long history of innovation across a variety of industries. Tracing their roots back to the early 1800s, the company started out making farm equipment. It was in 1907 when they released their first automobile, the Auto Buggy. After noticing farmers were removing seats to make more space for cargo, the company released the Auto Wagon, considered the predecessor to today's pickup trucks. In the 1930s, International Harvester trucks earned a reputation for reliability and durability when they were used to build the Hoover Dam, and much later in 1961, the International Harvester Scout was released, considered by many to be the first SUV. In the 1980s, IH sold their farm equipment business, rebranded as Navistar and focused on commercial trucks. The company was acquired by Volkswagen in mid-2021.
International Harvester Scout
Debuting in 1961, the International Harvester Scout was a rugged all-terrain family vehicle. Available in a variety of body styles including soft-top, hardtop and pickup, this capable 4x4 was produced until 1980. With the recent Volkswagen acquisition, there is some speculation that a new Scout could be on the horizon. But for now, the International Harvester Scout remains a beloved icon of American automobile history and continues to grow in value as a collectible vehicle.
