Hummer history and future
Big, boxy and military-styled, the Hummer first launched as a civilian vehicle in 1992. The Hummer H1 was a hit when it first debuted, produced by AM General and inspired by its military vehicle the Humvee—short for High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle or HMMWV. General Motors purchased the Hummer brand in 1999, adding the smaller Hummer H2 and Hummer H3 to the lineup in 2002 and 2005. Due to declining sales, GM halted production of Hummer vehicles in 2010, effectively retiring the brand. Recently, however, Hummer announced that it will be returning as a nameplate under the GMC brand. Electric Hummer trucks and SUVs are expected to debut in 2022.
Popular Hummer models
Produced from 1992 to 2006, the original Hummer, also known as the Hummer H1, is clearly inspired by military vehicles. It was offered with a choice of diesel or gas V8 engines, three to five-speed automatic transmission and available in a variety of body types, including four-door hardtop, two-door pickup and soft-top convertible. The Hummer H2 debuted in 2002, offering a smaller footprint in your choice of a four-door SUV or pick-up truck. The most fuel-efficient model, the Hummer H3, launched in 2005, delivering the brand's unmistakable look at a more attainable price point. All Hummer models feature excellent off-road capability and generous cargo space.
