Honda Prelude history and evolution
The first generation of Honda Preludes launched in Japan in 1978 before coming to North America in 1979. Designed to rival the Toyota Celica, early models were fairly boxy and not that exciting. Over the course of five generations, Honda would continue to refine the design and improve performance, eventually producing a coveted high-tech sports coupe. The 1979 model used the same 72 horsepower engine as the Honda Accord and offered a five-speed manual or two-speed automatic transmission. By 1997, engine power would be boosted to 195 horsepower.
