When it comes to recognizability, few cars share as much exposure as the Ford Crown Victoria, or commonly referred to as the “Ford Crown Vic”. Although the name may not ring a bell, it is almost guaranteed that you have seen the Ford Crown Victoria in action. For one, the four-door sedan is the most used of its type in video games, appearing in a staggering 179 unique games. Additionally, the full-size sedan was a common choice for law enforcement and taxicab use. Available from 1992 to 2012, the Ford Crown Victoria managed to make its mark despite inconsistent sales. Thankfully, there are still plenty of Ford Crown Victoria for sale despite discontinuation.
First-generation Ford Crown Victoria
Before the official Ford Crown Victoria launch in 1992, the company had utilized the model’s name on previous occasions. Most recognizable would be the former Ford LTD Crown Victoria, a top trim option of the Ford LTD lineup. The 1992 Ford Crown Victoria was the largest sedan from the company at the time. It was a direct counterpart to the Mercury Grand Marquis. Built on the Ford Panther platform, the Ford Crown Victoria was only available with four doors, four-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel-drive. And the arrival of the vehicle was in line with the rising popularity of family-oriented sedans.
Second-generation Ford Crown Victoria
The first-generation Ford Crown Victoria was a critical success. Unfortunately, it struggled to sell as well as its Mercury Grand Marquis counterpart. When it came time for a new redesign, the second-generation Ford Crown Victoria took many notes to look more similar to its sister vehicle. The more conservative design fit more with the American-made Ford lineup. Launched in 1998, the second-generation Ford Crown Victoria enjoyed moderate success before being discontinued in 2012.
