The Ford Motor Company was founded by Henry Ford on June 16th, 1903 with its first factory situated in Detroit, Michigan. This was Ford's second attempt at a car company as he had left the Henry Ford Company, which would go on to become Cadillac, in 1902. In the company's earliest days it produced a handful of cars from parts supplied by other companies. Cars at the time were painstakingly assembled and therefore expensive. Ford wanted to make them available to the middle class which meant the costs of production had to come down. To this end, he developed the automotive assembly line and began manufacturing parts in-house.
A history of innovation
The 1908 Model T was the world's first mass-produced car and its sales far eclipsed anything that had gone before it. Previous models had sold a few thousand units at most, but Ford built and sold more than fifteen million Model Ts during its 19-year production life. The company continued to innovate with windshields made from safety glass and affordable performance cars, creating an entirely new genre of car with the launch of the Mustang. Pony cars, as they came to be known, were exciting and aimed at younger buyers. Soon the other American carmakers were scrambling to build their own pony cars to compete with the Mustang.
