Fiat was founded on July 11, 1899 by Giovanni Agnelli and a group of partners in Turin, Italy. The company's first car, the 4 HP, debuted the same year, and its first factory opened in 1900. Originally staffed by 35 employees, the plant built 24 cars in its first year, but by 1906 it was cranking out more than 1,100. The first Fiat exported to the US arrived in 1908, and in 1910 a factory was built in Poughkeepsie, New York—the very same factory that manufactured machinery and ammunition for the Allies during the First World War, up until the U.S. officially joined the war effort and it was closed down.
The Comebacks
Fiat re-entered the North American market during the 1950s, with its range of compact, fuel-efficient city cars. Buyers liked the car's stylish design, but by the early 1980s, the brand had fallen from favour and gained a reputation for poor reliability. Sales slowed, and in 1983, Fiat packed up its tent. The company's next return to North America came in 2011 as a result of the Italian company's investment in a 20% stake in Chrysler. The new Fiat 500 became a fan favourite once again, and Fiat launched a range of larger four-door vehicles, along with its commercial vans that sold under the Dodge brand.
