Enzo Ferrari successfully fielded Alfa Romeo race cars after he founded the Scuderia Ferrari racing team in 1929. The team became Alfa Romeo's official racing effort and remained so until 1939, when Ferrari left to start his own operation. Taking the iconic prancing horse emblem from the plane of a World War II Italian fighter ace, Ferrari built race cars before branching out into road cars to help fund racing activities. The first car to wear both the Cavallino Rampante and the Ferrari name arrived in 1947 in the shape of the 1.5-litre V12-powered 125 S. This would be the first entry in what would go on to become one of the most celebrated family trees in automotive history.
Racing pedigree
The Scuderia Ferrari has been a staple of Formula 1 since the 1950s and is the oldest, most successful team, with 16 constructors championships and 15 drivers championships. That racing prowess has been translated into road cars that are exclusive, exciting and extremely valuable. From the most up-to-date supercars to legends like the 1963 250 GTO that sold for $70 million in 2018, Ferrari's road cars have always been desirable. The 288 GTO is often cited as the world's first supercar, and the F40 that followed it beat Porsche to the punch and became the world's first 200 mph production car.
