Eagle was a car company born out of Chrysler's purchase of the American Motors Corporation in 1987. AMC, owned by Renault at the time, also controlled the lucrative and historic Jeep brand. Chrysler wanted to acquire Jeep but Renault packaged AMC as part of the deal. Chrysler accepted the terms and the Eagle brand was formed from a mix of inherited AMC vehicles and imported Renault- and Mitsubishi-built cars. The company was named after the AMC Eagle, which was arguably America's first crossover.
Great design, lackluster marketing
Despite the smart designs that Chrysler inherited from the AMC era, Eagle vehicles were often overshadowed on dealership floors by the more popular Jeep. The rugged off-roaders had better profit margins than Eagle's lineup and were treated favourably by dealers in addition to having more advertising dollars spent on them. Despite this, the Eagle Premier was well-reviewed and praised for its modern technology and interior room while the Eagle Talon sports car was designed and engineered by Mitsubishi with styling and assembly handled by Chrysler in the US. The Talon would prove to be Eagle's final car, as Chrysler discontinued the brand in 1998.
