Dodge Viper history and evolution
Inspired by the Shelby Cobra, the Dodge Viper debuted as a concept car in 1989 before launching in 1992. During the production process, the company turned to Lamborghini for help modifying the Dodge RAM V10 truck engine into something better suited to a high-performance sports car. The first generation of Dodge Viper convertibles was equipped with a 400 horsepower V10 engine, scorchingly hot side exhaust pipes and very little in the way of creature comforts. Second generation vehicles, 1996 to 2002, featured a new coupe version, available hardtop roof, standard airbags and rear exhaust. The third generation debuted in 2003, offering 500 horsepower and a return of the iconic side exhaust pipes. The fifth and final generation ran from 2013 to 2017, introducing electronic stability and traction control.
Dodge Viper features to look for
As with any vehicle, features will vary between model years and trim levels. The 2015 Dodge Viper boasted peak performance with its 645 horsepower 8.4-litre V10 engine, rear-wheel drive and six-speed manual transmission. The two-seater is surprisingly spacious, with generous head- and legroom. Earlier models had fairly basic interiors, but by 2015, more luxuries and convenience features had been added. On fifth-generation models, look for upgraded leather interior, touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth and Harmon Kardon sound system.
