First introduced as an auto-show concept car back in 2000, the Chevrolet SSR debuted at a time when retro design was in demand. The concept Chevy SSR housed a powerful Chevrolet Silverado 6.0-litre V8 engine, appealing to both car and truck enthusiasts. However, when the truck went into production in 2002, Chevrolet equipped it with a 300-horsepower 5.3-litre V8 and four-speed automatic transmission, diminishing both its speed and capability. For the final two model years, 2005 and 2006, Chevy increased engine power, installing a 390-horsepower V8 engine from the Chevrolet Corvette, and added an optional six-speed manual transmission.

Due to its short production run, all models of the Chevrolet SSR are fairly similar.
