History of the Chevrolet Nova
The Nova name actually started as a trim level on the compact Chevrolet II. The first generation of the Chevrolet II Nova ran from 1962 to 1965. In 1963, Chevrolet began evolving their budget car into something a bit sportier with the introduction of design features like bucket seats. Then in 1964, they added a V8 engine, propelling the car into the muscle car category. When the brief second generation debuted in 1966, it introduced a powerful new 350 horsepower engine. In 1968, the third generation launched with an all-new look, followed by a new name in 1969. The car was now officially called the Chevrolet Nova. Three more generations ran from 1973 to 1974, 1975 to 1979 and 1985 to 1988, with later generations reflecting that the iconic muscle car era was over.
Chevrolet Nova models to look for
Classic car enthusiasts generally focus on Chevrolet Nova models from the 1960s and early 1970s. Later models stray from the muscle car look and performance that restorers are often looking for. Models from the third generation offer peak power and attractive semi-fastback styling. With the gas crisis of the mid-1970s and increase in regulations, fourth- and fifth-generation Chevrolet Novas, model years 1973 to 1979, saw reduced power and performance, and the introduction of a hatchback model. Sixth-generation Chevy Novas, model years 1985 to 1988, were actually built in partnership with Toyota and share a platform with the Toyota Corolla.
