The Chevrolet El Camino is unlike most other cars. Described as a coupe utility vehicle, it operates more like a pickup truck. However, the Chevrolet El Camino may be classified as a pickup; it is more of an altered station wagon that integrated a cargo bed. Launched in 1959, the Chevrolet El Camino was a direct response to the successful Ford Ranchero. The vehicle survived through five generations until being discontinued in 1987. Today the car is considered a classic muscle car, and many potential buyers are looking for a Chevrolet El Camino for sale.
Chevrolet El Camino history
Chevrolet missed the mark on the coupe utility design releasing the Chevrolet El Camino two years after the Ford Ranchero. While it looks as if Chevrolet was operating from a place of competition, it is said that the concept was floated around years before. Like the Ford Ranchero, the Chevrolet El Camino was built on the existing platform of a station wagon, specifically the Chevrolet Brookwood. And while both vehicles were directly competitive, the Chevrolet El Camino quickly outsold the Ford Ranchero.
Chevrolet El Camino legacy
Today the Chevrolet El Camino remains a classic collector’s car for enthusiasts. There no longer remained a demand for the coupe utility design, and it struggled to enter a new generation. However, the idea is not entirely dead in the water. Chevrolet released a new Chevrolet El Camino concept vehicle in 1995 but was laid behind because of the rising popularity of the SUV. Pontiac later revealed their concept coupe utility variation of a Pontiac G8. However, this vehicle would also never come to light due to the closure and discontinuation of the Pontiac brand.
