The Cadillac Escalade has evolved across its five generations, transforming from an old-school SUV to a cutting-edge luxury vehicle since its launch in 1999. The first Cadillac Escalade arrived with seating for five and was closely related to the GMC Yukon. Featuring a sturdy 5.7-litre V8 paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission, the first Cadillac Escalade came with many luxury features as standard, as well as selectable 4-wheel drive. For the second generation, launched in 2002, rear-wheel drive was standard with all-wheel drive included on the extended wheelbase ESV (Escalade Stretch Vehicle) version as well as the EXT pickup trick. AWD models came with a 6.0-litre V8 as standard.
Continuous refinement
The third-generation Cadillac Escalade debuted in 2007 with a 400 horsepower 6.2-litre V8 engine. A hybrid version of the Cadillac Escalade became available for the first time in 2008, while the fourth generation launched in 2015 boasting a more efficient 6.2 litre V8 mated to a 6-speed automatic and featuring improved suspension. The fifth-generation Cadillac Escalade arrived in 2020 featuring a 10-speed automatic transmission and Cadillac's hands-free Super Cruise system. A diesel engine is offered for the first time, as well as the high-performance Cadillac Escalade V powered by Cadillac's supercharged V8 Blackwing engine. An all-electric variant is also available.
Luxury SUV rivals
Thanks to its ongoing refinement, the Cadillac Escalade competes against the best of the luxury SUV segment such as the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Land Rover Range Rover and Lincoln Navigator.
