The BMW 3 Serieswagon arrived with the E30 generation. Already a great-handling car, the BMW 3 Series was made more practical by the extra enclosure out back. The wagon variants were known as the BMW 3 Series Touring cars, and the multi-link suspension was a great improvement over the previous generations. Improvements have included satellite navigation and rain-sensing windscreen wipers. All-wheel drive was also optional on the E46 generation of BMW 3 Series.
Close, but no M3
The fifth-generation wagon BMW 3 Series was launched in 2004. Powered by a 3.0-litre straight-six engine, the E91 BMW 3 Series could be optioned with automatic or manual transmissions, both with six gears. The sixth generation launched in 2011 and received praise for its chassis, which improved the car's balance and handling. The engine was upgraded to a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder and the automatic transmission came with eight gears. Sadly, for enthusiasts in North America, BMW doesn't sell the seventh generation BMW 3 Series as a wagon on our side of the Atlantic. Doubly so, as this is the first generation to receive a bonafide BMW M3 Touring variant.
