AM General is a manufacturer of rugged off-road vehicles as well as commercial trucks and buses. The company is best known for producing the military and civilian versions of the HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle), also known as the Humvee in military guise or as the civilian Hummer.
Though the company's origins trace all the way back to 1908, the nameplate was created when the American Motors Corporation purchased the Kaiser-Jeep Corporation before spinning Jeep's military and commercial operations off into a new company: AM General. In addition to its military and commercial vehicle products, it has also built vehicles for the US Postal Service.
An American icon
AM General is undoubtedly most famous for building the Humvee for the US army as well as its civilian-market counterpart. Production began in 1984 at a purpose-built factory in Mishawaka, Indiana with more than 250,000 of the highly capable 1 1/4 ton trucks manufactured to date. The Humvee, now known as the Hummer, was made available to the public for the first time in 1992, and General Motors bought the rights to the Hummer in 1999, though AM General continued to build the first-generation H1 in Indiana, as well as the H2 until 2009.
