The Acura TL debuted in 1996, designed for drivers who want a mix of luxury and performance. Positioned at the centre of the Acura range, the TL initially was offered with powerful five- and six-cylinder engines. These sent power to the front wheels through a four-speed automatic gearbox. The second-generation Acura TL arrived for the 1999 model year, with its V6 producing 225 horsepower. The four-speed automatic transmission was replaced by a five-speed for the arrival of the Acura TL Type-S in 2002, and its engine got a boost to 260 horsepower.
Improved performance and aggressive styling
The third-generation Acura TL launched for the 2004 model year, with its V6 engine now producing 258 horsepower. This generation also offered a six-speed manual gearbox for the first time. The Acura TL A-Spec further improved performance thanks to its lower, stiffer suspension, bigger wheels and performance tires. A new TL Type-S arrived in 2007, continuing the legacy of strong performance with a luxurious cabin. This was with a six-speed manual or a five-speed paddle-shifted automatic transmission. The fourth-generation Acura TL launched for the 2009 model year, bringing more aggressive styling and Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive for the first time.
