The Acura EL is a compact sedan that was built in Alliston, Ontario for the Canadian market between 1997 and 2005. It proved to be a great success and was the company's top seller from its launch until 2003. The Acura EL was an upgraded version of the Honda Civic and was powered by the same 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 127 horsepower with admirable fuel economy. A four-speed automatic transmission was standard with a five-speed unit available as an optional extra.
Upgrades and second generation
Numerous upgrades were made to the Acura EL, resulting in a more luxurious vehicle. Extensive noise insulation was added throughout the body, while new dampers and steering components softened bumps in the road. The exterior received new panels front and rear to match Acura's design language, and the interior featured finer materials, with options including a power sunroof and leather seats. A second-generation Acura EL arrived in 2001 based on the seventh-generation Honda Civic, featuring heated power mirrors, cruise control and rear disc brakes as standard. The Acura EL went out of production in 2005 to be replaced by the Acura CSX.
